भारत हैवी इलेक्ट्रिकल्स लिमिटेड (भेल) के सहयोग से 1976 और 1981 में कोरबा में विद्युत ताप संयंत्र की 120-120 मेगावाट की दो इकाइयों स्थापित की गई थीं। अपने 45 साल के इस सफर में प्लांट ने न केवल मध्य प्रदेश, बल्कि अन्य राज्यों को भी सेवाएं दी। अब दोनों इकाइयों से औसतन 90-90 मेगावॉट ही बिजली का उत्पादन हो रहा था।
छत्तीसगढ़ राज्य ऊर्जा उत्पादन कंपनी लिमिटेड (CSPGCL) द्वारा प्लांट्स को संचालित किया जा रहा था। पहले बंद 4 इकाइयों के स्क्रैप को 75 करोड़ रुपये में खरीदा है। दोनों प्लांट्स में 454 नियमित और 550 ठेका कर्मचारी कार्यरत थे।
